It’s mental self-flagellation: the prying open of one’s life, the splitting of the past like a cracked egg, the choice to trap yourself in the mirrored halls of your own memory, the equivalent of digging a nail into an open sore. It’s his problem, not mine.Īt work, I sit at the concierge desk in the corner of the hotel lobby and give guests recommendations on where to go and what to eat. I wait a few minutes, try calling him, but when the voicemail kicks in, I shove my phone in my pocket and leave my apartment, yanking the door closed behind me. I type out another- I’m here if you want to talk-then think better and delete it, send instead a wordless line of question marks. I bring up my last text, sent to Strane four hours ago: So, are you ok … ? He still hasn’t responded, hasn’t even read it. What kind of monster could do that to a child? Each time, the numbers climb and the comments multiply. Fasten the gold name tag to my lapel, refresh. I dig under the couch for my black flats, refresh. I put on my black wool suit, refresh again. While curling my hair, I refresh the page. I get ready for work and the post has been up for eight hours. Black Beauty, Chapter 13, last paragraph.Īlthough Black Beauty is looked at as a children's novel, Sewell did not write the novel for children. there is no religion without love, and people may talk as much as they like about their religion, but if it does not teach them to be good and kind to man and beast, it is all a sham. It is seen as a forerunner of the pony book. In 2003, the novel was listed at number 58 on the BBC's survey The Big Read. While forthrightly teaching animal welfare, it also teaches how to treat people with kindness, sympathy, and respect. With fifty million copies sold, Black Beauty is one of the best-selling books of all time. The novel became an immediate best-seller, with Sewell dying just five months after its publication, but having lived long enough to see her only novel become a success. It was composed in the last years of her life, during which she was bedridden and seriously ill. Black Beauty: His Grooms and Companions, the Autobiography of a Horse is an 1877 novel by English author Anna Sewell. OK, you can't really time travel, but you can create a memory in any situation-and it's often worth stepping back to do so. Live in the moment-and you can "time travel." (Or, as Amy refers to it, another wife.) No guilt necessary.Ħ. Women can lead multi-dimensional lives-and a little help never hurts. It’s OK to love your job, and to admit it. Mothers who work, mothers who stay home, women who prioritize work over getting drinks with friends, women who take work home to do with a glass of wine are all made to feel guilty. Pursuing a career in comedy could be seen as a foolish choice, but “it was the smartest thing to do,” according to the actress-and clearly, her inclinations were on point. It takes courage to decide to do what you want and figure out who you are. “It’s easier to be brave when you’re not alone,” says Poehler. Find a support system, because then it's OK to be brave or foolish. Career officers found Mauldin's work offensive- George Patton even threatened to "throw his a- in jail" when Bill lampooned the General's order that all men were to be clean-shaven. In early '44, Mauldin was given his own jeep to further material-gathering he created 6 cartoons a week for the soldiers' paper. The cartoon character Willie was based on Bill's friend Irving Richtel, and Willie's buddy Joe was an amalgam of typical G.I.s. By then he was contributing to STARS AND STRIPES. Twenty-two year-old Mauldin traveled as newspaper correspondent with the 45th Infantry Division on the Sicily invasion and Italian campaign. This unchaptered book presents a unique soldier's-view perspective of the last two momentous years of the war in Europe. Mauldin is easily as fine an author as artist. On page one of the book, Mauldin claims to not be a writer and that his text is primarily an attempt to explain how the 160 single panel cartoons reproduced here came to exist. There were at least seven printings in 1945 of Bill Mauldin's UP FRONT- my copy is from the 7th run. Audio Notes: Alexandra Haag does a nice job narrating. I enjoyed meeting the characters in this quick listen and look forward to reading/listening to more from this series.
